According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 68 U.S. children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is a 30% increase from 1 in 188 two years ago.
Each year, more children are be diagnosed with autism than diabetes, cancer, and AIDS combined.
For 2016, the total budget for the National Institute for Health(NIH) was $32.3 billion. However of this amount, just an estimated $216 million will be spent on autism research. This is just .67% of NIH funding — less than one percent!
It’s time for Congress to get serious about autism research, because autism research is critical for improving the quality of life for children affected by autism and their families.
